Who is the ACC Kidding?

Published September 13, 2012

John Swofford and ACC officials keep a straight face in justifying why they wooed and won Notre Dame to become a partial member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. They can spend energy describing this as a “perfect compromise,” but that dog won’t hunt. This was one more example of the money grab that is big time athletics, another signal that the excesses and abuses to athletes, institutions and fans will continue. Those of us who grew to love the ACC when it was comprised of regional teams strained when the Florida contingency came aboard and when Boston College and Virginia Tech joined. We’ve got nothing in common with or interest in Syracuse and Pittsburg. Now Notre Dame? What’s next? Maybe they can get the Carolina Panthers to join. Might as well join the professionals if they are going to act like them. Only when we stop watching, stop paying the big bucks to attend and stop giving to these athletic corporations formerly known as colleges will this madness stop. Don’t just complain, stop the game.
