Dallas, NC
It's not the Big D but this Dallas — Dallas, North Carolina - is big enough to host a presidential motorcade — as it did in 2005 when President Bush spoke at Gaston College.
Dallas, with more than 3,500 permanent citizens, is home to the ever-growing Gaston College which has an enrollment of 2,500.
Just as the one in Texas, Dallas was named after Vice President George Dallas, but may be better known as the town where Tar Heel icon William Friday, University of North Carolina president emeritus, was born and raised.
In addition, Olympic hurdler Duane Ross starred at Dallas' North Gaston High School. Movies, including the sequel to the horror classic Carrie, have been filmed here.
Only 20 miles from Charlotte, Dallas strives to keep its small-town, historic roots. Dallas is the site for the annual Cotton Ginning Days Festival which features a fully restored cotton gin.
Downtown Dallas, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features the restored Old Gaston County Courthouse. And the local Museum of Art and History has the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the state.
