Sparta, NC

Carolina Communities LogoLocated on the Eastern Continental Divide in Northwestern North Carolina is Sparta, a town of 1,800 people. Sparta was named after the Greek City-State of the same name. Originally settled by small farmers who came to town on Saturdays to purchase goods from general stores, Sparta is now home to industry, including Dr. Grabow pipes. Perhaps its most famous citizen was Robert Doughton who served in Congress from 1910 to 1953, was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for 20 years and helped found the Social Security System and championed the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sparta residents are now excited about the new 10,000 piece teapot collection donated by the Kamm family and the new museum they hope will attract visitors to their beautiful mountain home. Sparta is this weekÕs Carolina Community.
