Tarboro, NC
This week’s Carolina Community is Tarboro, founded on a bend on the Tar River in 1760. One of the oldest towns in our state, Tarboro still maintains the original town commons and a 45 block historic district with beautiful Georgian and Queen Ann style homes. Tarboro boasts a “front porch style of life.” George Washington visited Tarboro on his Southern Tour. This All-America City is the seat of Edgecombe County and is located along Highway 64, about 70 miles east of Raleigh. Steeped in history, Tarboro has a very active restoration and preservation program, including The Grove, plantation home of Thomas Blount, an officer in the Revolutionary War who was taken to England as a prisoner. It was also home to a Mexican War Colonel and later to the Commandant of Fort Macon in the Civil War. Tarboro is home to Edgecombe Community College, a Sara Lee Bakery, Barnhill Contractors and a number of other manufacturers. History, beauty, and charm make Tarboro this week’s Carolina Community.
