Boone, NC
America’s most famous outdoorsman, Daniel Boone, walked and trapped in the rugged hills of western North Carolina during the 1760s. This larger than life individual inspired the early leaders of Boone to pen his name to their town charter.
Nestled at an altitude of over 33-hundred feet above sea level, Boone is considered the “heart of high country.” Pennsylvania Moravian colonists originally sought this backcountry for a new settlement. Today this bustling city is home to Appalachian State University and is the center of tourism and commerce for the region.
Outdoor tourism offers abundant white-water rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, camping, and hiking only minutes away from a thriving downtown. Tourists can visit attractions like Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, and the outdoor drama “Horn in the West.”
Boone is also the headquarters for a worldwide Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritian’s Purse. Franklin Graham’s organization serves people in over 100 countries with food, clothing, and disaster relief. We are proud to salute Boone as this week’s Carolina Community.
