High Point, NC
High Point, North Carolina is a ‘top drawer’ community - literally. The city’s famous 36-foot high chest of drawers downtown is more than a promotional ploy. It symbolizes the tremendous construction of this city’s major industry. Known as the “Home Furnishings Capital of the World,” High Point is considered the center of the nation’s furniture manufacturing, marketing, and retailing.
In 1859 German and Quaker immigrants arrived in covered wagons on a former Indian trail. The Old Plank road brought many settlers to a part of the Piedmont blessed with abundant hardwoods. This area was at the “highest point” on the North Carolina Railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte.
This central location and abundant forests helped city founders and entrepreneurs create a furniture empire. In the late 1800’s local businessmen launched the High Point furniture factory. Now North Carolina’s eighth largest city, the 90,000 person population swells by 80-thousand furniture buyers and sellers from all 50 states, and 106 countries worldwide twice yearly.
