Smithfield, NC
One of the 10 oldest towns in North Carolina is this week’s Carolina Community, Smithfield. In 1777 Smith’s ferry helped travelers cross the Neuse River and is today the northernmost navigable town on the Neuse. Located halfway between New York City and Miami, this town of 12,000 is located on I-95.
General William Tecumseh Sherman announced Lee’s Confederate Army surrender from the Johnston County Courthouse steps in Smithfield. Movie star Ava Gardner was born in Smithfield and the Ava Gardner Museum has over 1,000 visitors per month. The annual Ham and Yam Festival the first weekend in May celebrates two of the regional agricultural commodities.
Once considered as the state capital Smithfield is the county seat of Johnston County, one of the fastest growing counties in the state.
