Kinston, NC
Kinston was originally home to the Neusiok Indians. Incorporated in 1762 as King’-ston, in honor of King George III, history remains important, with no less than five museums within city limits. The CSS Neuse Civil War Museum chronicles the saga of the famed ironclad gunboat.
The state’s first constitutionally elected Governor, Richard Caswell, called Kinston home, and for three years, it was the state capital.
Located at the geographic heart of Eastern North Carolina Kinston was an early agricultural trading center. In the 1950s DuPont located a textile manufacturing plant, providing a great boost. Today, Kinston is home to The Global TransPark and hit a home run with the Kinston Indians, the only professional sports team in eastern North Carolina.
Kinston’s diversity is also reflected in its people. After studying under Dr. Roentgen, Dr. Tom Parrott built the first x-ray machine. Former UNC basketball star Jerry Stackhouse hails from Kinston.
A rich history and great location make Kinston, home to 24,000 residents, a natural selection as this week’s Carolina Community.
