Mt. Airy, NC
Mt. Airy, this week’s Carolina Community, is often used as the epitome of southern charm and graciousness.
Nestled in “the hollows” where five mountains meet, Mt. Airy now flourishes with tourism, wineries, theatre, and mountain music. Mt. Airy’s native son Andy Griffith reportedly based much of his Any Griffith show on his memories of Mount Airy. Today this fame makes Mt. Airy a tourist focal point with shops and museums dedicated to the fictional Mayberry.
Also known as “Granite City” Mt. Airy is home to the world’s largest open face granite quarry. ‘Rocking’ music is also the city’s life-blood. Local old-time fiddling great Tommy Jarrell is memorialized yearly at the world famous Old Time Fiddler’s Convention. Once home to Confederate General JEB Stuart it was also home to the famous Siamese Twins.
Whether eating famous ‘sonkers’ deep-dish pies, or waving at Barney - complete with his patrol car – visitors still find that Mt. Airy is everyone’s favorite small town.
