Manteo, NC
Named for an Indian chief, and nestled on a bay, this week’s Carolina Community - Manteo - is surrounded by the stuff of legends.
Settled in 1865, and named Dare County’s seat of government, this community was first called Shallowbag Bay. It was renamed Manteo in honor of an Indian taken to visit the Queen of England 400 years ago. Sir Walter Raleigh attempted the first English speaking colony nearby. Now the nation’s oldest outdoor symphonic drama, The Lost Colony, chronicles the story of those settlers and their mysterious disappearance.
Today, Manteo is a haven. The city’s quaint downtown is filled with tourists savoring its Old World flair. The Elizabeth II, a graceful replica of the Colonists’ three-masted ship is nearby, as are The Elizabethan Gardens and the Maritime History Museum. Andy Griffith has a home here as does Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight.
For its illumination of history and for its restored charm, Manteo is this week’s Carolina Community.
