Roxboro, NC
This week’s Carolina Community is Roxboro in Person County, named after a famed Revolutionary War General.
Lured to this so-called “lost Eden” in the Northern Piedmont, railroad investment tycoon J. A. Long settled here in the 1890’s and brought in rail lines that attracted tobacco processing plants - jump-starting modern Roxboro.
With 9,000 residents Roxboro is undergoing another building boom. There’s a new open-air concert pavilion, amphitheater, and the County courthouse and Memorial Hospital are under major renovation.
In uptown Roxboro you can still find an authentic soda fountain drink. The district’s restored vintage Kirby Theatre offers a varied playbill. Other diverse attractions include an entertainment mall, motor sports dragway, and a ‘Personality Festival’. Anglers enjoy surrounding the Hyco and Mayo lakes. The city is also home to current PGA Senior Jim Thorpe and baseball Hall of Fame legend Enos “Country” Slaughter.
For its cultural and economic expansion Roxboro is this week’s Carolina Community.
