Lincolnton, NC
It may be the best-kept secret in western North Carolina. However, “Loveable Lincolnton” is not just in Charlotte’s shadow.
Lincolnton wears its history like a dress shirt. In fact, the first successful textile mill south of New England was built here in 1813. Currently, 23 sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city of 10,000 is the seat government for Lincoln County and is named for the Revolutionary Major General, Benjamin Lincoln, who accepted the official sword of British surrender at Yorktown. Lincolnton penned its charter in 1785. That makes it the second oldest incorporated city west of the Catawba River.
That river helps form Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. For those tourists nearby Lincolnton offers an array of art, food, shops and theatre with six distinct arts organizations flourishing there.
For a colonial past that is so distinctly preserved today, this classy neighbor of the big city makes Lincolnton this week’s Carolina Community.
