  Carolina Community for 05/04/06

Henderson, NC

Carolina Communities LogoThis week’s Carolina Community is Henderson, named after a judge who was a good friend of the founding family. Transportation has always played an important role in the development of Henderson. The Raleigh and Gaston railroad, completed in 1835, opened the area for economic development. Today, US 1 and I-85 play an important role in Henderson’s development.

Tobacco, cotton and textiles have been major contributors to this community of about 16,300 people. Over 16,000 students attend nearby Vance-Granville Community College. Nearby Kerr Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the Southeast, makes recreational activity and tourism a major focus today. TV talk show host Charlie Rose hails from Henderson, as does blues king B.B. King. P.H. Rose started a chain of dime stores called Roses here and each October nearly 30,000 drag racing fans attend a drag car nostalgia event.

Henderson, NCRecreation, business, and a friendly living make Henderson an ideal Carolina Community.
