  Carolina Community for 05/11/06

Edenton, NC

Carolina Communities LogoAlthough this week’s Carolina Community is considered one of the South’s prettiest towns, Edenton’s history is peppered with a history of anarchy.

In the early 1600’s adventurers from Jamestown discovered this natural harbor on the vast Albermarle Sound. The state’s first permanent settlement became the focal point of trade, culture and commerce during the plantation economy.

Edenton, NCNamed after Royal Governor Charles Eden in 1722, the first capitol of North Carolina was home to Royal Governors, signers of the Declaration, and one of our nation’s first Supreme Court Justices. Prior to the Revolution leading towns ladies protested the tax on tea by staging their own tea party and pledging to drink only yaupon tea.

Today the harbor drips with tourist pleasures. A new marina is a popular stop for intercoastal visitors, including cruise ships. The Historic District boasts three centuries of architectural distinction.

Its vivid history and abundant charms makes Edenton this week’s Carolina Community.
