Concord, NC
A dispute over the location of the seat of government for Cabarrus County led to the name of this week’s Carolina Community, Concord, meaning harmony.
Scotch-Irish and German immigrants settled the rich “black jack” lands in the 1740s. Patriotic furver grew when nearby Mecklenburg County created its own Declaration of Independence in 1775.
Concord was carved out of an area near an old Indian trading path in 1806. Fertile cotton farm lands created a textile empire when prosperous merchant James Canon bypassed northern cotton processing plants and opened Cannon Mills.
A different type of cash crop rules today. Concord is home to Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the tenth most popular state tourist site. Several NASCAR race teams call the area home. Phillip Morris operates a big cigarette plant here and shoppers love Concord Mills.
From revolution to revving motors, Concord is this week’s Carolina Community.
