  Carolina Community for 05/25/06

Whiteville, NC

Carolina Communities LogoLife is less stressful in this week’s Carolina Community, Whiteville. In Whiteville you can still enjoy a number of old-fashioned downtown grills or soda shops. Five railroad depots have been restored including one that houses the North Carolina Museum of Forestry.

Over 2-thousand acres of those forests were once in the possession of James White. In the 1700’s White was instrumental in choosing the location of the Columbus County Courthouse and later became the county’s first state Senator.

Whiteville, NCWhiteville’s agricultural growth was spurred by the nearby Cape Fear River, flowing into Wilmington’s port. Sportsmen also flock to the vast nearby Lake Waccamaw, home to the North Carolina Boys and Girls homes. In addition to recreation this former agricultural center is becoming a very active equestrian magnet with a large horse exhibition center nearby making Whiteville a horse-lovers destination.

For serving up charm along with strawberry, watermelon, and yam festivals, we make Whiteville this week’s Carolina Community.
