  Carolina Community for 06/08/06

Asheboro, NC

Carolina Communities LogoThis week’s Carolina Community, Asheboro, sports the African plains and the outback of Australia as a backyard. The North Carolina Zoological Park is the world’s largest natural habitat zoo with over one thousand animals within its 500 acres.

Located in the geographic center of our state, Asheboro was chartered in 1796. Railroads later launched Asheboro’s hosiery manufacturing trade. Today, Asheboro sports a revitalized downtown and new farmer’s market.

Asheboro, NCSurrounding Randolph County is loaded with attractions including historic Pisgah Covered Bridge. The Seagrove area offers over 100 potters with a 200-year tradition of internationally known handwork. Seven-time Winston Cup Champ Richard Petty’s museum and an aviation and motorcycle museum are on the tour. The city’s ballpark features the Coastal Plains League Copperheads baseball team.

For it’s worldwide attractions and craft heritage, we salute Asheboro as this week’s Carolina Community.
