U.S. Marines storm beaches worldwide. In 1941 they stormed Jacksonville, doubling its population in a few days. World War II planners needed an East Coast amphibious training site. Onslow County offered 11-thousad acres of beaches, forests, and proximity to coastal ports, so Camp LeJeune was built.
European and English immigrants settled along the New river in the early 1700’s. Jacksonville’s charter in 1842 honored the name of President Andrew Jackson. Tobacco, corn, peanuts, oysters, and hams were major products of commerce until the military arrived.
Today, 43,000 Marines and sailors are stationed at Camp LeJeune, named in honor of the Commanding General of the US 2nd Army in World War II. Marcus Jones the star running back of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tyrone Willingham, head coach at Stanford got their start at Jacksonville High School.
Because of Jacksonville’s charming riverfront lifestyle and proud military tradition, we make it this week’s Carolina Community.
