Lexington, NC
When you mention Lexington many think of the Revolutionary War, but folks in our state think Barbecue and fishing. Promoters say the area has the world’s most prestigious fishing tournament and “owns” the title of Barbecue Capital of the World.
But it was the Germans who first put this community on state maps by settling along the backcountry of the Yadkin River. Those settlers included Squire and Sarah Boone and their son Daniel who grew up as a teenager along the river. Legend has it that the community was named after the Revolutionary War battle in Massachusetts.
Today 100-thousand people enjoy barbecue at the largest one-day food festival in the Southeast, pork with a tomato based sauce. Nearby High Rock Lake hosts the BASS Master’s Classic. Renowned artist Bob Timberlake has a furniture gallery and Richard Childress’ NASCAR Racing Shop and Museum are also spots worth visiting.
For its diverse attractions and good eating we celebrate Lexington as this week’s Carolina Community.
