Burlington, NC
Originally this Carolina Community was named Company Shops, a repair center for the North Carolina Railroad. In the late 1800’s it was almost renamed Carolina-delphia. We know it as Burlington and there is some dispute as to whether it was named after the largest business at the time, the Burlington Coffin Factory or after a prized Jersey bull.
The Regulator rebellion against Royal Governor William Tryon was crushed in Alamance prior to the American revolution. In 1908 the South’s first cotton mill spurred the textile giant Burlington Industries. At one point this was known as the Hosiery Center of the South.
A 1930’s era Grand Theatre hosts meeting and performances and forty-six hand-carved wooden animals at the turn of the century Carousel are worth visiting.. Nearby Elon University and Alamance Community College offer educational opportunities.
Despite changing times Burlington has adapted and succeeded. That’s why it is this week’s Carolina Community.
