Fuquay-Varina, NC
One of North Carolina’s most interesting communities is Fuquay-Varina. Until merged in 1963 they were two adjacent communities.
French descendent Steven Fuquay discovered a mineral-rich spring on his property and named it Fuquay Springs. Railroads brought those wanting the waters. As late as 1920 the water was bottled and sold in hotels and pharmacies.
Next door was the settlement named Varina. During the civil war young girls would write letters to the troops to improve morale. One such writer called herself Varina. When the war was over her soldier came back, married her and continued to call her Varina.
The area developed as a major agricultural trading center, especially in tobacco. One of the fastest growing towns in southern Wake County, Fuquay-Varina offers bedroom community amenities and a slower pace of living welcomed by many. With a colorful history and exciting future Fuquay-Varina is this week’s Carolina Community.
