  Carolina Community for 07/13/06

Forest City, NC

Carolina Communities LogoWhen an old family home burned this western North Carolina crossroads called itself Burnt Chimney, but in 1887 the name was changed to Forest City, this week’s Carolina Community.

Scotch-Irish settlers arrived in the Rutherford County area from the Great Wagon Road. The small crossroads of Forest City flourished at the turn of the century with construction of the Florence Mill. In 1927 Forest City was selected at one of the ten most beautiful and best-planned towns in the by The US Department of Agriculture. Site Selection Magazine named it one of the top15 “micropolitan” areas for new industrial growth.

Forest City, NCToday a $20-million dollar renovation of Florence Mill will bring condos, restaurants, parks and performance space to this town of 7,400. For decades the Christmas display of ‘half million lights’ draws thousands of visitors. Renovation, scenery, and proximity to cities like Asheville and Charlotte are luring retirees.

Because of careful planning and innovative development we make Forest City this week’s Carolina Community.
