Morganton, NC
This week’s Carolina Community, Morganton, was once known as the Western state capital because it hosted the summer sessions of the state Supreme Court prior to the Civil War.
Located in the Catawba River valley along I-40, this community of 17,000 is surrounded by the beauty of Lake James and Table Rock Mountain. Named after revolutionary war General, Daniel Morgan, Scotch-Irish and German settlers populated the area. The movie, “The Last of the Mohicans” was filmed nearby. The progressive community was one of the first to have public electric lighting. And native son Sam Ervin, Jr is still fondly remembered.
The Broughton Hospital for the Mentally Ill and the NC School for the Deaf have large facilities here. Extensive paved trails at the entrance to the Catawba River Greenway Park delight residents and tourists. The Morganton All Stars, a Little League baseball team has reached national prominence.
We are proud to name Morganton as this week’s Carolina Community.
