  Carolina Community for 07/27/06

Ahoskie, NC

Carolina Communities LogoThis week’s Carolina Community is the only one of its name. Ahoskie, was first noted during the 1584 Amadas and Barlowe exploration of Sir Walter Raleigh. As early as 1719 there are records of settlers locating here. In trying to pronounce the Indian name for the area they first called it “Ahotskey” but it was later changed. Located near the Great Dismal Swamp in Northeastern Carolina, the community of 5,000 is seat of Hertford County.

Agriculture played the biggest role in the development of the region with saw mills and tobacco warehouses, especially after the railroad improved early transportation. Nearby is the 150 year old Chowan University, with over 1,000 students. Roanoke Chowan Community College also provides higher education opportunities to residents.

Ahoskie, NCArea residents enjoy the annual Indian Summer days festival in October while touring the historic district that includes an old Vaudeville theatre. The fairground holds the only sanctioned harness race track in the state.

Ahoskie, “the only one,” is this week’s Carolina Community.
