Kitty Hawk, NC
When you mention Kitty Hawk everyone associates this week’s Carolina Community with the Wright brothers. Although their famed first flight occurred four miles south, they came to Kitty Hawk first in 1900, used its post office, and stayed with a local family.
Residents of this remote fishing village survived over 200 years by living along the protected sound. Indians had used the banks for seasonal hunting. Although debated, it’s believed the name Kitty Hawk came from the Indian term - “killy honk” - meaning goose-hunting season. Kitty Hawk Woods features a maritime forest.
A 1930 bridge made Kitty Hawk into a classic beach vacation town that was incorporated in 1981. Now it is home to shops, restaurants, a booming retiree market, and 20-thousand summer renters. The dramatic Wright Brothers monument honoring the first flight is a tourist must.
Because of its small village charm and link to history we make Kitty Hawk this week’s Carolina Community.
