Lizzie, NC
Every Sunday you can hear horns, hounds, and hoofs in this week’s Carolina Community of Lizzie.
One of the state’s few fox hunting groups, or a “farmer’s pack,” rides each winter on a one-thousand acre tract skirting this unincorporated crossroads. Locals say the name for this rural highway junction most likely comes from the area’s first postal matron.
Lizzie is tucked into Greene County, named for Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene. The county was originally called Glascow, but was changed in 1799 when James Glascow was involved in land frauds. The area is noted for horse farms, bottom lands, tobacco and pottery. Tuscarora Indians lived in the tributaries of Contentnea Creek.
Today LL Murphy Hog Company’s general store still sells grain and merchandise. The creek basin offers over 100 miles of paddling, which a local club is now promoting. Greene County will be the center of a planned Tuscarora Discovery Trail.
For its interesting history and name Lizzie is this week’s Carolina Community.
