Wake Forest, NC
This week’s Carolina Community blossomed when someone put an ad in the paper to sell a farm.
The Baptist State Convention was formed in 1830 to provide education under Christian influences for ministers and laymen. They purchased 600 acres in the Wake Forest Township and opened Wake Forest Institute in 1834.
Re-chartered as Wake Forest College, the town and school grew together for more than a century, with a rail line spurring growth. Dr. William Poteat, President and professor of biology was the first scientist in the country to teach the theory of evolution. The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation gave a large perpetual grant to the college under condition that the school move to Winston-Salem.
The old campus was sold to the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. A Renaissance plan is revitalizing the city’s downtown and nearby Wakefield plantation is spawning thousands of new residents.
With its roots in education and religion and its rapid growth we make Wake Forest this week’s Carolina Community.
