Graham, NC
This week’s Carolina Community is Graham. In the early 1800’s travel to and from the county seat in Orange County was a long trip for many, so leaders decided to divide up the County and Alamance County was born. In 1851 the county seat was named Graham, after Governor William Graham.
The community became a trading center with tanning, harness and mercantile shops, but residents didn’t want the railroad to run through their community, so the town focused more on county legal business while trains stopped at textile mills in neighboring communities.
Graham is still the county seat and remains a desirable place to live, located conveniently thirty minutes from Chapel Hill, Durham, and Greensboro. A downtown historic area includes a bank in a remodeled Victorian style home and old Nick’s grocery store. A bustling court square with local businesses and an old fashioned picture show accompany new planned growth areas to make Graham a delight for residents.
