Wilmington, NC
This week’s Carolina Community is named for an Earl, visited by movie “royals,” and has tourism fit for a king. Named after the Earl of Wilmington, this colonial capital was the largest town in the state for years, due to its natural port.
Wilmington was known as “The Lifeline of the Confederacy” during the Civil War, as blockade runners slipped by federal troops stationed at Fort Fisher.
Tourism flourished because of nearby beaches, especially when the battleship USS North Carolina came to rest here. There are 85 festivals, a wonderful historic district, historic plantations to visit nearby and top class theatre productions.
With the largest movie production studio east of Hollywood many famous actors can often be seen. Famous natives include Michael Jordan, Charles Kuralt, David Brinkley, Sonny Jerguson, Roman Gabriel, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Transportation, tourism, and movies are king in North Carolina’s port city. That’s why we make Wilmington this week’s Carolina Community.
