Salisbury, NC
 Salisbury is named after a cathedral in England. Scotch-Irish and German immigrants settled the area in the mid-1700’s, located along two major wagon-roads.
During the Civil War, an old cotton mill became the state’s only Confederate prison. This National Cemetery contains the graves of 12-thousand Union soldiers, the largest cemetary of unknown soliders in our country.
Salisbury gave birth to Food Lion supermarkets, Stanback headache powders, the legendary Salisbury steak, and US Senator Elizabeth Dole. Daniel Boone headed west from here. George Washington spent the night and attended a grand ball here. Andrew Jackson studied law and Sarah Bernhardt and Roy Rogers performed here. President Eisenhower also visited. Cheerwine was born in a grocer’s basement.
 Today, trolleys travel Salisbury’s ten historic districts, 75 antique shops, the family home of Senator Elizabeth Dole, and Visual Arts Center, and the nearby NC Transportation Museum at Spencer. Catawba College is the sixth largest private college in our state.
