Marion, NC
This week’s Carolina Community is Marion, where “Main Street Meets the Mountains.”
50 acres of land for Marion was donated by Colonel John Carson, During the 1700’s the area was protected by a series of forts, kept active into the early 1800’s. Marion is named after the famed South Carolina Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox.” In 1845, Marion became the County Seat for McDowell County, named after Revolutionary War hero Joseph McDowell.
Shortly before the turn of the century, Marion was gutted by a fire. Along with the rebuilding, numerous furniture mills were constructed including Drexel Furniture’s Marion plant.
Today, Marion is just north of I-40 and minutes away from Lake James and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Marion holds many events including the Spring Mountain Glory Festival.
For its mountain magnificence and gateway status we choose Marion as this week’s Carolina Community.
