Lumberton, NC
This week’s Carolina Community, Lumberton, sits along the scenic Lumbee River, although it was named because it exported so much lumber. Revolutionary General John Willis donated land for the city as the seat of Robeson County. Lumberton was incorporated in 1859 and is almost half-way between Florida and New York on I-95.
Scottish Highlanders settled amidst Tuscarora, Cherokee, and Cheraw Indians, as well as freed and runaway African Americans. Robeson County has the ninth largest population of American Indians in the US and the most ethnically diverse population in the country. Robeson has the largest land mass of any county in the state.
The railroad helped transport lumber products, cotton, tobacco, textiles and light manufacturing. Over 400 archaeological sites are on record, most along the river. The annual fall Chevy to the Levy and Scottish Highland Games highlight the year.
For its history and diversity we make Lumberton this week’s Carolina Community.
