Vanceboro, NC
In 1876 this week’s Carolina Community was known as Swift Creek. Gubernatorial candidate Zebulon Vance came to town to campaign. Townspeople were so taken by him that they changed the name of their community to Vanceboro. Vance opposed North Carolina’s entry into the Civil War serving two terms as Governor and later as U.S. Senator.
A quiet community of 850 on Highway 17 between Washington and New Bern, this Craven County town is dotted with farms, a downtown, the Farm Life Indians, West Craven Eagles and a genteel way of life not unlike that Vance experienced.
October 21st will be a big date for Vanceboro as they celebrate their 130th anniversary with live bands, youth events and food. The God and Country celebration will re-enact that Zebulon Vance speech. In the spirit of Democracy election candidates will get free room and board at the town’s oldest bed and breakfast inn.
History comes alive and is made October 21st in this week’s Carolina Community, Vanceboro.
