King, NC
In the late 1800’s, four tiny towns near Winston-Salem needed a post office. The new postmaster picked the name King’s Cabin, honoring a local family that dated back to the 1700’s. When the railroad came through in 1888 the name was changed simply to King.
Large plantations dotted the region and discoveries of large deposits of iron ore spawned an iron-making business.
Located near the Sauratown Mountain range, named after an ancient tribe of Indians, King is only minutes away from Hanging Rock and mineral springs, like Vade Mecum, that drew crowds of tourists. Come sit at the counter of the old King Drug Company and walk the streets of the historic downtown. One of the fastest growing bedroom communities in the Piedmont Triad, country music star Joe Nichols grew up in King.
For its family heritage and for its foothill charms, we name King this week’s Carolina Community.
