Morehead City, NC
 In the 1850s Governor John Morehead joined a group of investors in purchasing 600 acres on a coastal peninsula and launched present day Morehead City. In 1857 the investors held a public auction of 150 lots and they were sold in three days. By 1860 the incorporated town of Morehead City was known as the Summer Capital by the Sea.
Storms drove fishermen inland from the barrier islands. Tourism, the port, and rail kept the town viable. A dog racing track operated briefly after World War II.
 Today the State Port nets $30 million in revenues. The state and three major colleges have marine research facilities and the waterfront has been renovated.
The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, with a million dollar purse, attracts anglers from near and far. An annual seafood festival offers food and fun to thousands. Retirees flock here for casual living and the lure of the Crystal Coast, another reason why we name Morehead City this week’s Carolina Community.
