Murphy, NC
 Murphy is either first or last, depending on whether you are entering or leaving the State. Murphy is our state’s westernmost town This Indian trading post was first named Huntersville, then Huntington and was renamed for Archibald Murphy, a state senator and education advocate. It’s Cherokee County’s seat of government.
Storms drove fishermen inland from the barrier islands. Tourism, the port, and rail kept the town viable. A dog racing track operated briefly after World War II.
 Hernando De Soto was lured by gold to its river valleys in the 1500’s. A growing number of settlers provoked President Andrew Jackson to send 7,000 troops into the region in the 1800’s and led to the forced march of the Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma on The Trail of Tears. An Interpretative Center telling of this event opened this year.
Tourists can visit Murphy’s courthouse made almost entirely from local blue marble. They can take in a large air show, Heritage Walk, and the National Appalachian Jeep Jamboree with rock climbing, hill climbing, and stream crossing.
