Franklin, NC
 Located in the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina, Franklin is nestled among some of the oldest mountains in the world. This “Gem Capital of the World” offers tourists many gem mines and a nationally known summer gem show. A 19th century jailhouse downtown even serves as a gem museum.
 Cherokee Indians settled this area they called Nikwasi or “center of activity.” Named for a famed political leaser, Franklin became the seat of Macon County government in 1855 and 150 years later is still a trade hub of southwestern North Carolina. One local business invented electronic filing with the IRS, and a state-of-the-art telecommunications system will soon link the area with nearby states.
Tourists revel in nearby scenic gorges and numerous waterfalls, enjoy Scottish music at a festival each June, and can visit one of country’s last old-style agricultural fairs.
