Burgaw, NC
When you walk the quaint, oak-lined courthouse square in Burgaw you’d think you were on a movie set - in fact, you are. A 1984 Stephen King movie first discovered the town, followed by others. Stars like John Travolta, Ashley Judd, James Garner, and Paul Newman have roamed the streets.
Stars and visitors sample malts and sandwiches at Dees Drug Store and shop in some of the family stores downtown, many of them run by third generations.
The area was part of a European experiment in the early 1800’s, as farmers from Italy and Eastern Europe were recruited to buy 10-acre lots and use intensive agriculture on less land. Burgaw became the Pender County seat in 1879, the geographic center of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. The train depot is the state’s oldest.
Burgaw hosts 17-thousand visitors at the annual NC Blueberry Festival, now a 48 million dollar crop.
