Farmville, NC
This week’s Carolina Community, Farmville, describes itself as downright friendly.
Once inhabited by Tuscarora Indians. Benjamin May, an early settler, militia captain, and legislator was awarded 12-hundred acres of land in what is now Pitt County. In the 1750’s tobacco plantations and farms developed around what was called New Town. When incorporated in 1872, the name was changed to Farmville.
The May Museum displays Old South relics. Several 100-year old businesses still operate. A 1920’s theatre is home to the Arts Council and musicals.
Farmville’s proximity to Greenville and Pitt County Hospital lures homeowners and is creating a development boom. Congressman Walter Jones calls Farmville home as did Singer Roberta Flack. The North American headquarters of Alliance One International is located in this community of 4,500.
A new large town gazebo and commons, along with an innovative four-school campus have restored the neighborhood school concept. Much more than cows and plows, we salute Farmville as this week’s Carolina Community.
