Troy, NC
Legend has it that Troy had streets paved with Gold. Residents did find some small nuggets in fill dirt hauled in to pave streets.
Town Creek Indians first settled around 1500, Scottish immigrants coming later. First call West’s Oldfield, the name was changed to Troy, probably after state legislator John Troy.
Literally surrounding Troy is the Uwharrie National Forrest with extensive hiking, biking, and camping amenities.
The seat of government for Montgomery County, Troy has a unique intern program that helps train local government administrators. Capel Rugs, the largest manufacturer and importer of area rugs in the country, calls Troy home.
Troyfest brings thousands each July, but the real spirit of Troy is found at Christmas each year at the annual Fellowship Dinner when scores of volunteers come together to serve turkey and trimmings on Christmas Day. Local stores provide a gift to each person who attends.
If not streets of gold, Troy residents have hearts of gold, making them this week’s Carolina Community.
