Monroe, NC
This week’s Carolina Community was named for a President and was home of a Senator.
Named for President James Monroe, this Union County seat of government flourished with completion of the railroad from Charlotte to Wilmington. Although the Depression halted rapid economic expansion, Monroe became home to World War II military base Camp Sutton.
Today, the Main Street City of 30,000 is growing rapidly along the Highway 74 corridor to Charlotte, while offering amenities desired of smaller communities. Major renovations are taking place in the historic downtown, where Belk Department Stores got their start. The 1886 Courthouse on the square is a major focal point. The Jesse Helms Center highlights the life of the native son and former US Senator. Wingate University offers 1,700 students degrees in many majors.
