Rocky Mount, NC
A large mound of rocks along the Tar River gave this week’s Carolina Community its name.
Settled by Virginians in 1732, Rocky Mount flourished. Battle Mills and a rail line established the town as main commercial center.
King tobacco turned the city into one of the world’s largest bright leaf tobacco markets. A successful economic development program located new industries during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Located on I-95 and US 64 Rocky Mount is now the industrial and retail hub of five counties.
Hardees and RBC Centura Bank grew up here. Rocky Mount’s historic downtown and train station are being renovated along with a number of federal style homes. The new Imperial Centre for Arts and Sciences houses one of the nation’s first digital planetariums.
Musicians Kay Kyser and Thelonious Monk, Basketball star Phil Ford, Governor Mike Easley, Attorney General Roy Cooper, are among many notables from the area.
