Southern Pines, NC
John Patrick bought 600 acres of land, he called Vineyard. Today we know it as Southern Pines. The vast pine forests yielded tar, turpentine, and naval stores on which the 17th Century Highland Scots depended for income. The Raleigh and Augusta railroad opened the area to commerce and tourists, who came to take the mineral waters. Before the 1931 merger there was East and West Southern Pines. West Southern Pines was one of the few incorporated African American towns in our state.
Today the area is loaded with golf resorts, 160 horse farms, and the arts. The large Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve and Center once was a winter retreat for a Pennsylvania coal baron, but now has a mix of nature and cultural events on campus.
This year the U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles returns to historic Pine Needles Golf resort. Forty-three golf courses are found in a 15-mile radius.
