Plymouth, NC
On the beautiful shoreline along the Roanoke River is Plymouth. English explorers visited the area in 1584. In 1790 Congress made Plymouth a port of delivery. Many believe it was named by sailors from Plymouth, Massachusetts. Schooners and later steamboats took naval stores and tobacco to New England and the West Indies.
In the 1800’s commerce thrived. Plymouth was one of six main ports in the state and ranked ninth in population until a visiting ship brought a fever to the town that wiped out many residents. The Battle of Plymouth was the second largest Civil War battle in our state and the last Confederate victory in the war. Union bombardments destroyed much of the town.
Today, a replica of the ironclad Ram Albemarle resides at the Port ‘O Plymouth Museum. Another replica of an 1866 light station sits on the riverbank.
