Greensboro, NC

In 1781 General Nathanial Greene commanded Revolutionary forces at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. He lost the battle but one of our state’s largest cities, Greensboro, was named for him.

Settled originally by Germans, Quakers and Scotch-Irish immigrants, Greensboro developed into a major rail hub and one of the largest textile centers in the south.

Greensboro was a main stop on the famous Underground railroad. The 1960 sit-in by four black college students at the Woolworths lunch counter is considered a significant event in the civil rights movement.

Greensboro is home to seven universities and colleges, golf’s Chrysler Classic, the Greensboro Symphony, Opera, and the renowned Eastern Music Festival. The Greensboro Coliseum has hosted many ACC Tournaments.

Greensboro natives include First Lady Dolly Madison, two time Governor John Motley Morehead, writer O. Henry, broadcaster Edward Murrow, radio personality Rick Dees, and sportscaster Howard Cosell and Olympic Gold Medal skater Joey Cheek.

North Carolina’s Gateway City, Greensboro, well deserves to be this week’s Carolina Community.
