Havelock, NC
Ask any resident in Havelock and they will tell you the noise you hear is the sound of freedom, coming from the world’s largest US Marine Corps Air Station.
Named after British General Sir Henry Havelock, naval stores were the first industry, but as business declined the families used the copper coils and their distilling expertise to turn the area into the “Moonshine Capital” of the east, making Craven County Corn Liquor.
In 1941 Congress authorized the purchase of 29-thousand acres at Cherry Point, named for a local post office situated among cherry trees.
Today the Air Station is one of the largest employers in the east, providing over 4,000 civilians some of the highest paying jobs east of I-95. Workers are trained at Craven Community College’s state-of-the-art Institute of Aeronautical Technology.
Over 250,000 are expected at the big air show in May. Visitors enjoy five full-size plane at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center.
