  Carolina Community for 3/8/07

Rockingham, NC

Carolina Communities Logo Racing put Rockingham on the map, but don’t speed through this Carolina Community.

In the last part of the 1700’s settlers along the fertile Pee Dee River formed Richmond County. Rockingham became the county seat, named after the Marquis of Rockingham, a Prime Minister and colonial sympathizer.

Rockingham Cotton and indigo were the primary crops, with some of the state’s finest antebellum homes located along the river, including the Leak-Wall house.

Mention “The Rock” and any racing fan knows you are talking about The North Carolina Motor Speedway and Rockingham Dragway, attracting more than 300,000 tourists to more than 70 events, including the Hot Rod World Finals. NASCAR racing was discontinued in 2004, although race drivers are taught here.

Governor Cameron Morrison came from here. So does American Idol star Bucky Covington. Rockingham also offers summer festivals and recreation at Hinson Lake and Lodge.

A friendly community of 10,000 is Rockingham, this week’s Carolina Community.
