Chapel Hill, NC
In the 1700’s New Hope Chapel was built on a granite plateau but the name was later shortened to Chapel Hill. In 1793 the cornerstone was laid for the first public university in America, The University of North Carolina, with early financing from a lottery.
Chartered in 1851, the town boasts 50,000 residents, along with 27,000 students at UNC. The GI Bill after World War II and the nearby Research Triangle Park prompted rapid growth.
Many know Chapel Hill because of basketball, football, baseball, and women’s soccer teams but there’s so much more to this village. The Ackland Art Museum has over 15,000 objects, the NC Botanical Gardens are the largest in the Southeast, with over 700 acres, and even the NASA Astronauts learn from the Morehead Planetarium.
Notables include Charles Kuralt, Paul Green, Dean Smith, Thomas Wolfe, William Friday, James Taylor, Howard Lee, and scores of sports starts.
