Hickory, NC
A 1790 tavern, built under a hickory tree in the northwest corner of Catawba County was called The Hickory Tavern, an early stagecoach stop. In 1870 the town that grew nearby was named Hickory and was a trading center on the NC Railroad. After World War II Hickory claimed 46-furniture plants, 9 hosiery mills, and 27 other factories.
Well over half the nation’s furniture and hosiery is made within 150-miles of Hickory and 40-percent of the world’s fiber optic cable. Even after losing 12,000 manufacturing jobs Hickory is rebounding. The famed Hickory Furniture Mart enjoys half-a million shoppers annually. Hickory also has a thriving art community that includes theatre, the Western Piedmont Symphony, the state’s second oldest Museum of Art, and 23 parks.
A multiple All American City winner, Hickory has been cited as one of the best places to live in the country, with one of the most outstanding public libraries.
