Matthews, NC
Matthews was first known as stump town, because the cotton farmers who cleared the land left so many stumps that buggy drivers couldn’t make a U-turn.
When the Carolina Central Railroad came they renamed it after Watson Matthews, a director of the rail line. By 1901, there were five passenger and eight freight trains daily. Matthews boasted two cotton gins, three general stores, a bank, two doctors, a pharmacy, a grist mill, blacksmith shop, livery stable and a hotel.
Today some 25,000 residents and several large corporations call this affluent and family-friendly community home. A new sportsplex encourages recreation and the professional women’s bowling championship is being staged here. Central Piedmont Community College recently opened an automotive technology center.
Dr. Selma Burke, creator of the image of President Roosevelt on the dime, has roots in Matthews as does Johnny Crowell, the only state resident inducted into the aviation hall of fame.
A neighbor to Charlotte and a treasure to residents makes Matthews an ideal Carolina Community.
